Risograph: walking from Falmouth to Coverack and camping by the Helford river

-

We invited risograph artists to walk Slow Ways routes and make a piece of bespoke artwork about the experience. Madeleine Kemsley chose a magical walk, night swim and wild camp in southwest Cornwall

By Madeleine Kemsley

I chose to walk from Falmouth to Coverack because I loved the variation in environments that the route provided. It starts by the sea and ends by the sea with lots of little woodlands, open fields and small villages sandwiched in-between. It’s quite a long route so I decided to set up camp once I reached the Helford river. This isn’t necessary but it’s one of my favourite spots for a night time swim; at this time of year there is phosphorescence in the water which is a truly otherworldly experience.

The next morning, I got the ferry across the river to continue my walk. I am much less familiar with the other side of the river so the second half of the walk felt like more of an adventure and led me to discover lots of new places that I’ll be sure to visit again.
